This file was last modified significantly on Oct 4th, 1995. To install Update_C, grab the tar archive file that your system can cope with (BSD/OS, FreeBSD, Linux, NetBSD can all cope with the gzipped tar archive easily, others should probably use the compressed file to save transfer time): update_c.tar Tar Archive update_c.tar.gz Tar Archive, gzipped update_c.tar.Z Tar Archive, compressed Please use *BINARY* FTP transfers. If you change an LF code into the CR/LF pair, these files will probably not work! Find the home directory for the Accelerated-X Server. The directory is called AcceleratedX and the home varies by OS. Default locations are: BSD/OS, FreeBSD, Linux, NetBSD: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 UnixWare: /usr/X/lib SCO: /usr/lib/X11 ISC: /usr/X11/lib Solaris: /usr/openwin/lib To install all patches for update level "c", use the file listed above and untar it over the Accelerated-X home directory, as above. The untar should overwrite files and add a few new files. Delete the boards and monitors cache files and rerun the Xinstall program\to re-set access permissions. # cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 # tar -xvf update_c.tar ... ... AcceleratedX/modules/trident.ddx ... # rm AcceleratedX/etc/Xboards # rm AcceleratedX/etc/Xmonitors # AcceleratedX/bin/Xinstall Rerun Xsetup if you have added new board or monitor description files. Restart the Server if you have added new modules or made other changes. __What Did I Do?__ Your system now has the equivalent of our 1.2c diskettes installed. You added support for ATI Xpression with 20C408 DAC Trident boards, 9440, 9420, 9400 NEC Versa P, our only portable currently supporting 800x600 You also updated a bunch of chipsets, including the Matrox Millenium and S3 chipsets, affecting almost all current S3 based boards. There are some minor changes affecting PCI support, or new DACs or new chip revs, for half a dozen other chips, too. There are a couple more noteworthy changes. We revised a memory handling module to provide better support for the OpenGL extension and to use a new logo banner, which is also included. The old logo banner was in 'puzzle' format, which loads fast, but is rather large and very few people could work out how to change it. The new format is RLE, which almost anyone can create, so you can make your own logo banners and have the Server show them when nothing else is happening... We also revved the SCO Xsight extension, finally curing a problem that we've had with SCO and S3 chips during VT switches when running Locus Merge.
