Carma will play on three Glulxe interpreters. They can be found at the if archive under \programming\glulx\interpreters\glulxe. Windows - WinGlulxe-035.zip Note that although several releases are labeled 035, they are actually different "builds." "Carma" needs the 1.17 release or higher. The release number (v.s. the number on the archive file) can be found in the interpreter's Glk menu, while it is running, under help. With this release, to hear sounds and music, you will also need the Windows Media Player installed. It is free and can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site. Linux - glulxe-0.35linux.tar.gz The compiled Linux Glulxe interpreter does not play sounds, and there is also a bug when it comes to displaying graphics on 24-bit color displays. However, this can be "fixed" simply by resetting your monitor's color depth. This is controlled with software, and it should be in the same place where you can reset your screen's resolution. Set to "high color" (16-bit) rather than "true color" (24-bit) and "Carma" will look/play as it should. There are also several patches that will fix xglk's color depth problem and add sound capability. If you are comfortable compiling your own interpreter they can be found at the if archive under \programming\glk\implementations\patches. You want Frank Otto's 24-bit picture patch, and the sound mixer patch, xglk0411-sdl-mixer-sound.tgz. With just the other sound patches, "Carma" will generate errors. This is because its sound files were created/reformatted under Windows and sound files are not as cross-platform-compatible as they should be. With the sound mixer patch, "Carma" will sound/play as it should. Mac - Glulxe-034.hqx A playtester has said "Carma" does not play well on the Mac. You can play it on the Mac, but you probably will not enjoy the experience. Pictures will be "flickery" and sounds, choppy. This seems due in large part to the QuickTime library. The only current "fix" is to reset the gamma correction on your monitor, if you can. Graphics created under Windows/Dos may look very dark on the Mac. But, at the time "Carma" was delivered to the Annual IF Competition, it probably should be considered basically unplayable with the Mac Glulxe interpreter. Unless you have access to no other machine and just want to "take a look" at "Carma."
