Mariner for Windows 3.1 - README file README.WRI Page README.WRI - last updated 26 September 1995 This is the README file for Mariner for Windows, version 1.0 beta 3 You may also want to review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) file for Mariner on NCD Software's FTP and Web servers at: ftp://ftp.mariner.ncd.com or http://www.mariner.ncd.com Items not Included in This Release - If you do not have a TCP/IP dialer or LAN drivers, we recommend you use the TCP/IP drivers from NCD Software. These drivers include everything you need for dialing in to your Internet service provider or communicating over LAN connections using TCP/IP. You can access NCD Software's FTP server and retrieve the file containing the Marathon Lite TCP/IP drivers from the following servers: ftp://ftp.mariner.ncd.com/pub/trial/windows/marthnlt.exe http://www.mariner.ncd.com/QuickStart/Install - The online help does not include information on the Network Request Limit parameter found under Configuration > Setup. This parameter limits the number of network requests Mariner will open at a single time. It is currently set to 10, and is not changeable with this release. UsageTips - For users with laptops or VGA monitors that display in 640x480 mode, you can view entire windows by maximizing them, and then switching between them and the AutoPilot using the Control-Tab key sequence. Configuration Tips - Once you have defined your mailbox in Mariner, you will see the following icon and description in your AutoPilot. You can then double-click on it to read your email. If you have made a mistake while defining your mailbox, you need to delete the mailbox and re-configure a new one. You do this by selecting your mailbox and hitting the delete (DEL) key. You can then configure a new mailbox by clicking on the Read Mail icon or by using the Tools menu. - When defining your mailbox, it is recommended that you check the box to leave your mail on the server. This way you can continue to read your mail using your normal procedures as well as using Mariner. - Before you can use the Net News reader, you must enter the name of your news server in the Configuration > Setup menu. You must get the name of your news server from your system administrator or from your Internet service provider. Known Problems or Issues - If you are already using a dialer and TCP/IP Winsock drivers, then Mariner can be used with these drivers. You may need to make your connection (i.e. have the modem make a dial connection) to your Internet service provider before starting Mariner. - If you are using the TCP/IP drivers from some vendors, you may experience problems using Mariner. Mariner is designed to open simultaneous asynchronous Domain Name Service (DNS) requests, which some vendors do not support. This problem has been found with the following: NetManage Chameleon Trumpet WinSock FTP Software OnNet - If you have not defined a mailbox for Mariner, the first time you use FTP, Mariner will prompt you for your e-mail host and user information. If you do not have an e-mail account, simply put in "demo" in these fields. Mariner uses your e-mail address as part of the anonymous login for FTP. - If loading from diskettes, you may not be prompted for the 3rd diskette. You will be prompted for the 3rd diskette if your system does not have the necessary OLE 2.0 libraries. - Some users have reported problems using the Net News Reader under beta releases of Windows 95. At this time we have not been able to reproduce this problem. - The current release of Mariner may appear slower than normal. It also may re-paint the screen 2 or 3 times. These are know problems and will be resolved in the next release. - The small cactus icon is a place-holder for the web browser component of Mariner. The cactus icon is used until the image is successfully downloaded. - When printing documents from the web, the font may appear very small when used with some printers. This is a know problem and will be resolved in the next release. - In the web browser component, when viewing a form where there is text immediately above input fields, the text may appear too close to the fields and therefore may cut off the very bottom of the text. These are known problems and will be resolved in the next release. - The Marathon Lite dialer is not intended for nor does it work on Windows 95 systems. - The IRC list-channels function is broken. It will be fixed in the next release.
