PPP Link configuration

To make a success of your connection to internet without difficulties, you have to use a communication program as the one supplied in this pack.

I/ Preparation

Start the communication program. The controls typed with the keyboard are indictated :

COMMAND STRING

and the answers :

MODEM RESPONS

If the display of the 2 capital letters lines do not differ from each other or do not from the rest of the text, make sure into font, that the normal title font and the bold title font differ from the standard text font too.

First of all, you have to make sure that your modem answers well. A simple interrogation is enough.

AT
OK

Then a test of re-initialisation. A crack may be heard in the loudspeaker.

ATZ
OK

If you have to enter a initialisation string speficic to your modem, it is time to do it.
Then you dial the access point number that your provider supplies to you. We suppose the number is 0123456789.

ATD0123456789

The modem picks off and dials the phone number. You hear the dialling tone and then the distant modem picks off. It ensures an exchange between the two modems to negociate the transmission speed and the compression protocol. When it is done, the loudspeaker cuts off and some messages appear.

CARRIER 28800
PROTOCOL LAP-M
CONNECT 115200

According to the configuration of your modem some of these messages may be not display or may be replace. In any case, the message CONNECT displays to insure that the modem link is settled.

Now the controls you type and the answers you receive are any more take in effect by your modem but by a distant computer located to your provider which charges of the link with internet.

From this point two cases may happen.

First case
You have no messages or the messages you receive are incomprehensible like :

~_}#}5}g8}5~

These messages occur quite some rate. At the end, it must likely your provider disconnect you. if not, turn off the modem or break off the link with ATH (see to the paragraph II how to break off the line).
If it is your case, your provider executes an immediate PPP connection, refer you to the paragraph IV to follow the manipulation.

Second case
After waiting, you obtain a welcome message :

Welcome to PROVIDER

You also can get to a prompt, you have to type the name of the server you want to access to).

Ser?

Then you are asked for your user name.

Login:

To which you reply with the login supplied by your provider.

JDupont

Then your password is required.

Password:

abcdefgh

Here we have take abcdefgh as password. In general, the provider does not send back display echo when you enter the password, it may send stars instead of original characters.

Lastly, it is possible your provider ask you which connection protocol you want. Obviously, we want to be in PPP.

Protocol:

PPP

From now, the connection must be settled, you must have the same displays as the first case.

Of course, the written messages are only examples : they may be very different according to your provider and the server program it uses.

II/ Disconnection

To disconnect the phone line, the more easy mean consits on turn off the modem but it is not the best one. It is better to make the modem hang up. for that type quickly (less than 1 second) tree times on the plus key.

+++

The modem does not display them. But after a short time, it shows you it returns back to control (command) mode).

OK

Order to the modem to hang up.

ATH
OK

It is the recommended method. However, when the PPP link is in process, it may not work. So, you have to close the PPP link. You can do it with the DECONNEXION button of PPP LINK.

III/ Login connection

If the text exchange between you and your provider unrolled well, you will have noted step by step the receipted and sent messages. Of course it is not necesary to indicate to PPP LINK all the received data : only the indipensable characters strings are entered.

How to determinate the characters string you have to enter ? First of all, keep only the dialog exchange begining after CONNECT (this one ecludes) and finishing just before the start of the PPP link. Then, isolate the messages you sent to the provider, those one must be enter entirely. Note which are the last characters sent by the provider before you had to send each message. You do not have to enter a lot of characeters, the important is to enter enough characters in order that there is no risk of confusion with another part of the text.

Here it is an example of an reception/sending exchange obtained afer the simplification of the access sequence described above.

Login:
JDupont
Password:
abdefgh
Protocol:
ppp

Those data will be introduced into the DIALOGUE box of PPP LINK as we can see with tis other example. Here, the received data have been cleared off the the first characters to avoid a risk of small/capital letter confusion on the first character. Besides the Login and the Password have been replaced with %l and p keywords, the true Login and Password are entered into the LOGIN box. At las, do not forget to select LOGIN at PASWORD METHOD into the LOGIN box.

IV/ Direct PPP connection

As soon as the connection is done, if you are in PPP or if the welcome page does not ask for yours Login and Password, it means you have to select the PAP authentication. Into the LOGIN bos, select PAP as a password method.
