The agenda will be focused on the process by which the IESG will evaluate the IP V7 proposals. 2) Protocol Actions o IP and ARP over FDDI The IP and ARP over FDDI protocol was approved by the IESG for recommendation to the IAB as a full Standard. This protocol is widely implemented by most router vendors and is widely deployed in commercial and university backbone networks. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Send a recommendation to the IAB to publish the Internet Draft as a full Standard. o Network Time Protocol The IESG discussed the two known NTP implementations and concluded that they were sufficiently independent for Draft Standard. The IESG continues to have concerns that this complex protocol, with its many tunable parameters may be difficult to implement from the specification. The IESG will look for additional implementations before considering this protocol for Full Standard. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Send a recommendation to the IAB recommending the elevation of the Network Time Protocol to Draft Standard status. o Telnet Environment Option The Telnet Working Group has submitted to the IESG a revised Environment option. This new version is intended to answer the objections raised by the IAB to the open-ended, Unix-centric nature of the previous submission. The IESG agreed that a last call was now appropriate. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Send a last call for the Telnet Environment Option. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Send a note to the IAB pointing out the Telnet Environment Option Last Call and specifically requesting comments. o Telnet Authentication The Telnet Working Group submitted to the IESG several documents for authenticating Telnet connections. These include a base authentication document, and specific profiles for SPX and Kerberos. These documents are complete for their intended purpose but are likely to be extended to include encryption in the near future. The Working Group has asked for an Experimental Protocol designation in the absence of a more formal Prototype designation. The IESG agreed that after these documents are given a security review by Steve Crocker, they should be published as Experimental Protocols. ACTION: Crocker (In absentia): Review the Telnet authentication protocols. o Token Ring MIB Nothing to report. o Routing Information Protocol An external review was done by Noel Chiappa. The protocol fits within the currently defined routing architecture and support the subnet masks and AS number needed for CIDR deployment. A few documentation shortcoming were identified and one technical concern was raised, specifically the possibilities of routing loops or failure where RIPv2 and RIPv1 are running together where subnetting has been enabled. Text identifying this problem should be added. ACTION: Hinden -- Get a new copy of the RIP V2 protocol posted as an Internet Draft. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- With Hinden, take Chiappa's review and write a recommendation to elevate the RIP V2 Protocol to Proposed Standard once the new Internet Draft is posted. Technical Management Issues o Review of Expired-in-Grade Protocols Several protocols not previously on the IESG list of in-progress works were noted. The IESG briefly reviewed each one and determined tentative courses of actions. - Telnet Linemode Option The Telnet Linemode option is widely used but the document required clarifications in several points. It is not clear to what extent these clarifications reflect current practice and whether there is demonstrated incompatibilities. ACTION: Hobby -- Encourage the revision of the Telnet Linemode Option and begin research into the operational use of this protocol. - CMOT The CMOT protocol as defined in RFC 1189 "Common Management Information Services and Protocols for the Internet" has expired in grade. The IESG was not aware of any currently implementations of this protocol and agreed to issue a last call to move this protocol off the standards track to Historical. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Send a last call proposing to move CMOT to Historical Standard Status. - NFS/RPC The Sun NFS and RPC protocols have been on the expired list for some time. There have been several efforts both to gain change control to allow these protocols to continue in the standards track and efforts to update the documentation with little success. The IESG agreed to issue a Last Call to move these protocols off the standard track to Informational. ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Send a last call proposing to move Sun NFS and RPC to Informational Status. o IP Version 7 Decision The IESG began discussing whether the a reasonable pruning of proposals can occur after the November IETF meeting. It is not likely that any particular proposal will be complete and implementation and transition information is anticipated to be sketchy. The IESG has firm plans to review the criteria and explore each proposal in terms of the criteria, however it is not clear that a pruning to a single proposal will be possible. The IESG plans to discuss the current plans in depth during the next teleconference. o Criteria from Partridge and Kastenholtz Additional IPv7 Evaluation criteria were suggested by Craig Partridge and Frank Kastenholtz beyond the criteria initially suggested by the IESG. The IESG discussed this effort and agreed that it was positive and that the work should be reviewed with the IESG proposal at a BOF during the Washington DC IETF meeting. Philip Almquist agreed to chair this meeting as the Internet AD. ACTION: Coya -- Find a time and schedule a session for the IP V7 Criteria BOF. o Poised Working Group A strawman proposal was sent to the Poised mailing list and had a quenching effect. The reduced level of discussion indicates some degree of uncertainty. The proposal was neither blasted nor praised. Several interpretations were discussed, and the IESG members agreed to individually solicit comments and encourage further discussion.
