WorldView For Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Version 0.9f Pre-Beta Release Notes 25-September-1995 All contents Copyright (c) 1995, Intervista Software, Inc. All Rights Reserved. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1.0 Software Requirements Windows 3.1 * Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 * Win32s Win32s is a Microsoft subsystem that allows 32 bit programs to run in the 16 bit Windows environment. WorldView is a 32-bit application and a 16-bit application is not planned. The most current version of Win32s is available for downloading at the following location: http://www.webmaster.com/vrml/wvwin. 2.0 Hardware Requirements To run WorldView 0.9f for Windows you should have at least: * 486/50 processor * 8 mb memory * 256 color display driver and graphics card 3.0 Installation 3.1 Win32s Installation for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 The WorldView 0.9f Pre-Beta release for Win32s systems has a Windows setup program. The setup program is in a self-extracting zip archive. All you have to do is execute the program wrldw32s.exe from the File Manager or use the Windows Program Manager commands File Run. Step 1: Copy the self extracting archive file "wrldw32s.exe" to a temporary directory. Step 2: From the File Manager double click on the file "wrldw32s.exe" or from the Program Manager Select File Run and enter drive:\tempdir\wlrdw32s.exe. Step 3: From the File Manager double click on the file "\tempdir\setup.exe" or from the Program Manager select File Run and enter drive:\tempdir\setup.exe Step 4: The WorldView setup program requires three basic inputs. First, the installation directory (default is c:\wrldview); second, whether you would like to backup files that will be replaced (only applicable for re-installations); and whether you would like to create a program group for Worldview. The following files will be installed by the WorldView 0.9f Pre-Beta setup program: drive:\installDir\install.log drive:\installDir\readme.wri drive:\installDir\uninstall.exe drive:\installDir\worldmap.ppm drive:\installDir\sphere1.xof drive:\installDir\sphere2.xof drive:\installDir\sphere3.xof drive:\installDir\sphere4.xof drive:\installDir\wrldview.exe drive:\installDir\hotspots.txt drive:\installDir\version.txt drive:\installDir\xhair.gif drive:\installDir\worlds\bldgf.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\chair3.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\cone.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\cube.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\cubes.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\cyl.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\desk.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\gun.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\lamp.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\logo.gif drive:\installDir\worlds\logo.ppm drive:\installDir\worlds\logo1.gif drive:\installDir\worlds\mod_clin.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\simple1.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\spherema.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\table1.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\vrml.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\window.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\c_table.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\cone.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\cylinder.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\desklamp.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\filecab.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\helpicon.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\logo1.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\monitor.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\spanner.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\temple.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\trythis.wrl drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\wood08.gif drive:\installDir\worlds\textures\worldmap.ppm drive:\installDir\backup\ (optional) drive:\windows\wrldview.ini 4.0 Recommended Browser WorldView can be run either in stand-alone mode or in conjunction with a World Wide Web browser. We recommend using Netscape for Windows Version 1.1N or 1.2N. WorldView seamlessly interoperates with Netscape via the standard Windows IPC mechanisms: DDE and OLE 2.0. This means that you can click on a hotspot in WorldView and the URL will be sent to and displayed in Netscape. Subsequently, you can also click on a hotspot in Netscape and the URL will be sent to and displayed in WorldView. The WorldView initialization file (drive:\windowsDir\wrldview.ini) is pre-configured to run with Netscape. If you have NOT configured WorldView as a helper application for Netscape, there is no additional configuration required. If you are already using WorldView with Netscape 1.1N or 1.2N, you do NOT need to configure WorldView as a "helper" application. If you have configured WorldView as a helper application for Netscape, the following steps should be followed to take advantage of the new WorldView messaging capabilities: 1. Check your wrldview.ini file and ensure that the entry for "browser=" is pointing to either Netscape 1.1N or 1.2N. 2. If you are running Netscape 1.1N, and if you previously configured WorldView as a "helper application", you need to remove this support from the netscape.ini file. An example entry is as follows: [Viewers] x-world/x-vrml=c:\wrldview\wrldview.exe Remove this entry from your netscape.ini file and save the file. Be sure to restart netscape for the changes to go into effect. 3. If you are running Netscape 1.2N (16-bit) and you previously configured WorldView as a "helper application", you will also need to remove this support from the netscape.ini file (same as in Step 2). WorldView will also work with Enhanced Mosaic 2.0 from Spyglass and will require modifications to your wrldview.ini file. It will need to be configured as a "helper" application. We are currently working with all Spyglass-enabled browser vendors to ensure that WorldView is compatible with this messaging implementation. This support will be available in our official beta release in October. Configuring Enhanced Mosaic 2.0 from Spyglass Step 1: Select the "Edit/Helpers" menu item. Step 2: Select the "Add" button in the Helpers dialog box. Step 3: In the Configure File Type dialog enter: For Description: VRML Documents For MIME type: x-world/x-vrml For Suffixes: .wrl For Encoding: Text For Helper App: \wrldview %s Any other browser should be able to start WorldView, but they have not been tested. Note: In order to run WorldView, you must be in 256 color mode. 5.0 Help Files Not available in this release. 6.0 Sample Worlds Example VRML worlds are provided in the drive:\installDir\worlds\ directory. However, because most of the models that have been created are not strict VRML, we have decided to support the following extensions which appear in several models on the net. We are also going to suggest that these extensions be placed in the VRML 1.1 specification. farDistance field in PerspectiveCamera node nearDistance field in PerspectiveCamera node 9.0 New Features in this Release 1.
