First Floor Smart Bookmarks 2.0 First Floor Smart Bookmarks 2.0 is subject to the terms detailed in the license agreement accompanying it. Installation Instructions Smart Bookmarks Version 2.0 is being distributed as both a 16-bit Windows program and a 32-bit windows program. If you are running Windows 3.x or WFW, you MUST use the 16-bit Smart Bookmarks even if you have Win32s installed. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT, use the 32-bit Smart Bookmarks. To run the 32-bit Smart Bookmarks, you MUST have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack. Both Windows 95 and Windows NT provide 32-bit TCP/IP stacks that you can setup. To obtain a copy of First Floor Smart Bookmarks, first download one of the self-extracting executable files into a temporary directory. for 16-bit: sb1620.exe for 32-bit: sb3220.exe Old Auto-Load Settings Preserved First Floor Smart Bookmarks 1.0 users that are upgrading to this release should be aware that their old Auto-Load settings will be disabled during setup to avoid potential conflicts. The original settings are preserved in your WIN.INI file should you wish to re-enable the 1.0 version after uninstalling this release. Toggling Auto-Load with Browser On or Off Auto-load features under the 2.0 release can be enabled or disabled from Tools | Preferences | Options tab. Simply check or uncheck the Auto-Load with Browser box. Win32s For Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups users: 32-bit Smart Bookmarks does not run on Win32s. Windows NT For Windows NT 3.51: 32-bit Smart Bookmarks does not run with the Windows NT 3.51 preview shell. For Windows NT 4.0: 32-bit Smart Bookmarks shell extensions are not installed with the Windows NT 4.0 Beta due to problems with NT support for Internet shortcuts. By default, 32-bit Smart Bookarks shell extensions are not installed on Windows NT 4.0. You must select the Custom setup option and then select 'Shell Extensions' if you want to install them. We have noted problems with Shell Extensions under the Windows NT 4.0 Beta shell. Windows StartUp Group Setup installs a Task Monitor and a Task Bar Extension (32-bit only) into the Windows StartUp folder. If the StartUp folder doesn't exist, setup will create it in the standard location. If you have relocated your StartUp folder, or are using a version of Windows that uses a non-standard location for this folder, you will need to move these items from the newly created StartUp folder to the non-standard folder. You should reboot your computer after completing this task. Running First Floor Smart Bookmarks What do I need to run First Floor Smart Bookmarks? To run First Floor Smart Bookmarks you must have a direct Internet connection. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not necessarily mean you can run Smart Bookmarks. There are three requirements for Smart Bookmarks: 1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider. 2. TCP/IP stack. 3. First Floor Smart Bookmarks software. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service provider in your area. You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP account from an Internet provider (for a dialup account). When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when running First Floor Smart Bookmarks, this means your computer is looking for the WINSOCK.DLL file that is part of a winsock package. Using Your Smart Bookmarks 1.0 Catalog You can choose to migrate your old catalog into the new Smart Bookmarks 2.0 catalog directory during installation. If you choose to use your old catalog, Smart Bookmarks will COPY your old catalog into the new location. Your old catalog will remain unaffected by this copy operation. Items that are monitored under Smart Bookmarks 1.0 will be imported into Agent folders in 2.0. Items monitored for changes in content only are imported into the "Bookmarks Checked for Changes" agent, items monitored for new links are imported into the "Bookmarks Checked for New Links" agent. Uninstalling Smart Bookmarks Smart Bookmarks 2.0 for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95/NT should be uninstalled by running the "Remove First Floor Smart Bookmarks" utility from the Smart Bookmarks program group. Under Windows 95, you can also run this uninstall routine from Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel folder. IMPORTANT! You must reboot your computer to complete the uninstall routine. Uninstall Does Not Destroy Catalog Data The uninstall routine does not destroy existing catalog data. If you want to remove the old catalog, you must do so manually. Known Problems Here are a few things of which you should be aware in this release: If you crash out of the program, you may lose information about URLs that were localized. These will be re-fetched on startup. We have noted problems with the Internet-In-A-Box protocol stack version 4.00.01.19 and Novell's Netware protocol stack. Large caches and/or large numbers of bookmarks in Agent Results can cause delays in starting the program. Opening URLs using frames while View Smart Folders or View Agent Results are in use from within Netscape Navigator 2.0 causes a Java script error. You can still view URLs using frames by opening them from within the product instead of from within the browser. The 32-bit product will not display Agent icons in the left margin of the Smart Window grid under Small Icon mode. Agent icons indicate a bookmark is monitored by an agent. This condition has no effect on monitoring status and does not affect other display modes in the grid. Sorting by Agent or Parent in Agent Results view will cause slower performance when large numbers of results exist. Installation of the Microsoft ActiveX SDK causes incorrect display of large icons, incorrect Toolbar display, and incorrect Detail mode display in 32-bit Smart Bookmarks. This is a known problem with the comctl32.dll installed by the Microsoft ActiveX SDK. When Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 is selected as the default browser, launching Internet Explorer from the shell while Smart Bookmarks is running may cause Internet Explorer to fault. Selecting the enhanced Favorites menu in Internet Explorer 2.0 before an URL from Smart Bookmarks is loaded in the browser may cause Internet Explorer to fault under some circumstances. This behavior may also occur in multiple browser windows in Internet Explorer 2.0. Web Searches against Excite!, Web Crawler, DejaNews, and OpenText do not return results when Smart Bookmarks is configured for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0, or with Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic. You can search any of these databases directly from your browser. Search results from the browser can be saved as bookmarks and monitored successfully. Web Search functionality for the Yahoo!, Alta Vista, Lycos, and Infoseek perform as expected with the above browsers. Beta users of the 16-bit product may be required to re-enter realm and password information after upgrading to this release. Exiting while the Smart Window is maximized causes this program to front and maximize when Load with the Browser is enabled. To correct this state, simply resize the window before exiting the application. URLs from Gopher and FTP servers may be stored as bookmarks but cannot be monitored by this application. Please report all problems including version, environment (Win3.1, Win95, Win NT), and browser via e-mail to: bookmarks-bugs@firstfloor.com
