NETSCAPE SMARTMARKS 1.0 Please see our On-Line Quick Start Guide for a brief tutorial on getting the most from Netscape SmartMarks. * If You Are Upgrading From An Earlier Version * Known Issues * Tips * Make Sure You Try * Getting Support * Uninstalling SmartMarks --------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPGRADING Upgrading: The default install directory for Netscape SmartMarks is C:\SMRTMRKS. If you are upgrading from a previous or beta version of SmartMarks, you may want to overwrite your old installation. Specify the path for the old installation to overwrite it. The SmartMarks installation will ask whether you want to overwrite your existing catalog. Choose No to preserve your existing catalog. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- KNOWN ISSUES Setup: If you did not close all your Windows applications prior to the installation of SmartMarks (with the exception of Program Manager), you may receive the following message at the end of the SmartMarks setup " SmartMarks is not properly installed..." SmartMarks provides a complete log of installed files in the SETUP.LOG file of your installation directory. Shut down Windows and copy the files in the INSTALL subdirectory to the Windows system (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) directory. After copying these files you must restart Windows for changes to take effect. DOS SHARE.EXE Under Windows 3.1: , SmartMarks requires that SHARE.EXE be loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or VSHARE.386 in your SYSTEM.INI file to run properly under Windows 3.1. SHARE is not required under Windows for Workgroups 3.1x, Windows NT, or Windows 95. To add SHARE.EXE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, insert the following line: C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE To add the VSHARE device to your SYSTEM.INI file, add the following statement to the [386Enh] section: DEVICE=VSHARE.386 You must exit and restart Windows for either change to take effect. Windows 95: If you are using the 32-bit version of Navigator, and you installed it into a path with a long directory name, you will need to specify the location of Netscape Navigator from the Internet tab of SmartMarks' Preferences dialog box. This is only necessary the first time that you run SmartMarks. 1. Launch SmartMarks. 2. Select Tools -> Preferences from the SmartMarks menu. 3. Select the Internet tab from the Preferences dialog box and browse to the directory and location of the "NETSCAPE.EXE" 4. Exit and restart SmartMarks Navigator/SmartMarks Interaction: There is a bug in Windows 95 that sometimes prevents Navigator from coming to the front after double-clicking on a bookmark in SmartMarks. If this occurs, simply click on the Navigator icon or window to bring it to the front. The same Windows 95 bug may on occasion prevent the Navigator window from coming to the front after opening an URL from SmartMarks. This bug does not prevent the URL from loading in Navigator. Simply click on the Navigator icon or window to bring it to the front. Catalog Problems: If your computer crashes while SmartMarks is running you may find that when you restart SmartMarks there will be missing bookmarks or URLs. In most cases you can repair the SmarkMarks catalog using the Smart Catalog Maintenance utility supplied with SmartMarks. 1. Exit Netscape and SmartMarks 2. Double-click on the Smart Catalog Maintenance icon from the Netscape SmartMarks program group. 3. Click on the Verify button, the Smart Catalog Maintenance utility will verify and attempt to repair any problems in the catalog. If you receive Unexpected Error (0x0012), perform the following steps : 1. Close the Smart Catalog Maintenance utility and SmartMarks. 2. Navigate to the C:\SMRTMRKS\VFC directory or wherever you installed SmartMarks. 3. Delete all files with the extensions DBL and TAF (*.DBL and *.TAF from the DOS prompt). 4. Restart Smart Catalog Mainenance. 5. Press Verify. In most cases, Verify will now proceed without problems. If you are still having problems after completing the above steps, please contact technical support. PC-NFSpro: There is a problem with the PC-NFSpro TCP/IP stack that can cause a catalog error and require re-starting Netscape SmartMarks to resume. This problem only occurs with PC-NFSpro. Spry's Internet in a Box: If Navigator crashes while you are running Spry's Internet in a Box, you may need to restart Windows in order to get SmartMarks to run correctly again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIPS Running Netscape SmartMarks: By default, SmartMarks will be started automatically when you start Netscape Navigator. You can change this by editing the WIN.INI file and either removing or commenting out, the following line: load=C:\SMRTMRKS\FFTSKMON.EXE Drag and Drop: Netscape SmartMarks supports drag and drop operations on both Folders and Bookmarks. The only limitation is that you can not drag if both your source and destination are in the Tree (left pane). You either need to have the source or destination in the right pane or use Tools->New Window to open a second Window to use as a source or target. Note that you can force a move operation (if it is appropriate) by using the SHIFT key when you drop, and force a copy operation using the CONTROL key. Use Monitoring Wisely: Monitoring large lists or searches can consume quite a bit of time due to extensive access to large numbers of Web sites. Particularly if you have a slow network link or limited memory, make sure to narrow your searches down to a manageable set of information for Netscape SmartMarks to track. Lists and search results of 1-40 items work very nicely, although Netscape SmartMarks has been used to monitor lists with well over 1000 items successfully (but they can take quite a while at that size!). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAKE SURE YOU TRY Monitoring Bookmarks: Using "File->Monitor Changes", or by dragging the bookmark to the Web Monitor window. Monitoring What's New: Pick your favorite list of headlines, press releases, news stories, or events. Drag it to the Web Monitor, and ask to be notified when a link is added or changed. Now, every time there is a new story or event, it will be automatically dropped in your Web monitor for you to see, without you having to keep trolling for the site!
