Mariner 1.0 32-bit Beta 1 Release Notes Installation If you are reinstalling Mariner, exit Mariner before beginning the installation of this version. Depending on your installation choices, you may not be prompted to insert all the Mariner disks. Known Problems or Issues You may also want to review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) file for Mariner on NCD Software's FTP and Web servers at: ftp://ftp.mariner.ncd.com or http://www.mariner.ncd.com - If you are already using a dialer and TCP/IP Winsock drivers, then Mariner can be used with these drivers. You may need to make your connection (i.e. have the modem make a dial connection) to your Internet service provider before starting Mariner. - If you have not defined a mailbox for Mariner, the first time you use FTP, Mariner will prompt you for your e-mail host and user information. If you do not have an e-mail account, simply put in "demo" in these fields. Mariner uses your e-mail address as part of the anonymous login for FTP. - Some users have reported problems using the Net News Reader under beta releases of Windows 95. At this time we have not been able to reproduce this problem. - The small cactus icon is a place-holder for the web browser component of Mariner. The cactus icon is used until the image is successfully downloaded. - When printing documents from the web, the font may appear very small when used with some printers. This is a known problem and will be resolved in the next release. - In the web browser component, when viewing a form where there is text immediately above input fields, the text may appear too close to the fields and therefore may cut off the very bottom of the text. These are known problems and will be resolved in the next release. - Occasionally when connecting to a Gopher server, you may get a message of "Protocol error 10065" or "Protocol error 11001". This is a known problem with some gopher servers and will be fixed in the next release. - Under Setup->Configuration, under the Cache tab, the Cache Limit field does not currently work and will be fixed in the next release. - If you have a previous version of Mariner installed, you need to install this Win '95 version of Mariner in a clean directory. Some of the data files may be incompatible with previous versions of Mariner. - There is a known problem using the right mouse button in list views (news and e-mail.) Use the Action menu instead. Usage and Configuration Tips Window size: The size of the Mariner application window is either the default or the last used less-than maximized window size. To maximize the size of the Mariner main window, drag the window to fit the size of the screen. The next time you restart Mariner, it remembers the window size. If you have a laptop or VGA monitor that displays in 640x480 mode, you can view an entire window by maximizing it and then switching between the window and the AutoPilot using the Control-Tab key sequence. Multiple AutoPilot windows: When using multiple AutoPilot windows, use the drag and drop method for copying from one AutoPilot to another. This is also the best method to copy items from Mariner's default AutoPilot window. Dial-up networks: If you are using a dialer to reach an Internet Service Provider, you may need to dial and make your Internet connection before starting Mariner. Printing: Fonts in printed Web documents may appear very small on some printers. Images may not print correctly if the printer uses a raster graphics print method. Reload: When you select Reload from the Tools menu or click the View latest version of document icon (both perform the same function), you must have a Web, FTP, or Gopher window highlighted (active) in order for the reload function to work. Where am I?: When you select Where am I? from the Tools menu or the toolbar, you must have a display window highlighted (active); it does not work if an AutoPilot window is selected. Network activity: When Mariner is requesting and retrieving information, the network activity lights change from green to red (these lights are located at the bottom right corner of the Mariner main window). To further clarify what the system is doing, the following messages display next to the lights, depending on the current activity: • Document: Received <#> - Displays the number of bytes received for the requested document. • Document: Done - Document retrieval is complete. • DNS waiting: - Host name is being resolved into an internet address. • Host contacted: waiting for reply - Host has been reached; requesting a document. Window activity: When Mariner updates an open window, a set of "marching lines" displays, progressing clockwise around the window title. In an active open window, these marching lines display in the border color; in an inactive open window, the marching lines display in gray. These lines indicate that activity is occurring within a specific window. Action menu: View in New Window is a new menu item. If you select a document from the AutoPilot and select View in New Window from the Action menu, the document displays in a new window. This function is the same as dragging and dropping a document icon to the workspace in the Mariner main window. Kelvin 64 video cards: Some display problems have been reported on Kelvin 64 display cards. Pages with .gif images may fail to repaint properly. Document storage: A downloaded file is not saved if it is larger than the Cache Limit specified on the Cache tab under Setup... in the Configuration menu. Web Placeholders: The small cactus icon acts as a placeholder until an image is successfully downloaded. A red "X" over the cactus indicates a problem downloading or displaying the image. Chat Chat window: In the Mariner User's Guide, the User Nickname and User Channel fields are called Nick and Chan. They now display in the Chat window as Nickname: and Channel:. IRC networks: IRC is broken down into semi-closed networks. There are two main free public IRC networks: EFnet and Undernet. These two networks are heavily used as global chat networks. Of the two, the Undernet is more stable. The following Web document is a good source for introductory IRC information: http://ww2.undernet.org:8080/~cs93jtl/IRC.html Here's a list of other Web documents pertaining to IRC: • Comprehensive summary of all IRC Web documents: http://urth.acsu.buffalo.edu/irc/WWW/ircdocs.html • Internet Relay Chat Gallery (NightEye's pages for IRC): http://www.lib.utk.edu:70/Justin/irc/ • Karll's Undernet IRC pages (Undernet's primary Web site): http://www.undernet.org/~agifford/undernet/ Private messages: You can use Chat to send private messages to another channel member. To do this, enter /msg in the IRC Message Area and press the Enter key. Where is the nickname of the channel member. If you want to send a private message to more than one channel member, enter the members' nicknames separated by commas (no spaces). For example, /msg ,, Mail Leave mail on server: When defining your mailbox via the Read mail toolbar icon, we recommend you check this box. When checked, you can use Mariner and your previous mail reader. Mail retrieval: Mariner retrieves mail whenever you: • Select the Read mail icon from the toolbar • Select Read Mail from the Tools menu • Open the mailbox in your AutoPilot Mariner can automatically retrieve your mail at timed intervals. By default, this function is disabled when you install Mariner. To enable the automatic mail retrieval function: 1. Save a copy of your C:\NCDSOFT\MARINER\MARINER.INI file. 2. Edit the C:\NCDSOFT\MARINER\MARINER.INI file by changing Check Mail Enabled from 0 to 1. 3. Save the C:\NCDSOFT\MARINER\MARINER.INI file, and restart Mariner. The default interval is set to retrieve mail every 5 minutes. For instructions on how to increase or decrease the default setting, see "Mail" on page A-4 of the Mariner User's Guide. Configuration tips: Once you have defined your mailbox in Mariner, the mailbox icon displays in your AutoPilot. You can then double-click the icon to read your email. If you make a mistake while defining your mailbox, follow the steps below to delete the mailbox and reconfigure a new one: 1. Select your mailbox from the AutoPilot. 2. Press the Delete key. 3. Click the Read mail icon to configure a new mailbox. No new messages: This dialog displays each time you access your mailbox. Please note that there may indeed be new messages. NeXT systems: When replying to email from a NeXT operating system, delete the brackets surrounding the sender's name. Address book: To rename the address book in the default AutoPilot: 1. Delete the current address book, and create a new one (see "Using Address Books and Distribution Lists" in Chapter 10 of the Mariner User's Guide). 2. Create a new AutoPilot and a new address book in that AutoPilot. News Configuration: Before you can use the NetNews reader, you must enter the name of your news server by selecting Setup... from the Configuration menu. You can get the name of your news server from your system administrator or from your Internet service provider. Posting articles: News articles should always have subject titles. Articles without subject titles are not posted. FTP Email account: The first time you use FTP, Mariner prompts you for your email host and user information if you have not yet defined a mailbox for Mariner. If you do not have an email account or do not use Mariner for email, enter demo in these fields. Mariner uses your email address as part of the anonymous login for FTP. Non-anonymous FTP: By default, Mariner FTP logs in to the “anonymous” account on FTP sites. To use another login account, enter: ftp://user:password@hostname in the Add New Item dialog from the Use Internet file manager (FTP) toolbar icon. For example, “Joe” is a user with the password “secret” and has an account on the machine “server.company.com”. His login account is: ftp://joe:secret@server.company.com Network Network compatibility: If you are using the TCP/IP drivers from other vendors, you may experience problems using Mariner. Mariner is designed to open simultaneous asynchronous Domain Name Service (DNS) requests, which some vendors do not support. This problem has been found with the following: • NetManage Chameleon (versions prior to 4.1) • Trumpet WinSock (versions prior to 2.1F) • FTP Software OnNet (version 2.0) Network check: To see how the network is functioning, select the Check Network Requests icon from the toolbar. Controlling Internet Access Access control: It is important to remember your lock list password (set by the Configuration menu's Edit Access Control item). Write your password down for future reference. Once a password is entered, it can only be modified if both the Inclusive locks list and the Exclusive locks lists are empty. This operation is prohibited from your workspace: You'll receive this error message if you attempt to open another AutoPilot window while Access Control is enabled on the open AutoPilot window. You can only open other AutoPilot windows if both the Inclusive locks list and the Exclusive locks list are empty. Login password: It is important to remember your login password. Write your password down for future reference. Refer to "Securing AutoPilot Windows" in Chapter 7 of the Mariner User's Guide for further information. Resynchronizing the Cache If you find that Mariner is using more disk space than you set for the cache (storage) limit, you need to resynchronize the cache. To do this: 1. Select Setup... from the Configuration menu. 2. Select the Cache tab. 3. Click Delete Cache Now!. Exiting Mariner
