README: HotJava 1.0 preBeta1 This directory and all the directories below it contain the complete HotJava 1.0 preBeta1 release of the HotJava Internet browser. To run HotJava from the same directory where this README file is located, simply type: ./bin/hotjava UNIX .\bin\hotjava WinNT & Win95 or: ./bin/hotjava URL UNIX .\bin\hotjava URL WinNT & Win95 If you specify a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), HotJava will treat that as its home page for this instance of HotJava. (By default, you'll see the HotJava Welcome page before the home page. You can turn off the Welcome page for future invocations of HotJava using HotJava's Display Preferences page.) You can also add the HotJava bin directory to your PATH environment variable, add /bin/hotjava to a menu of programs, or whatever other method you typically use for running programs. NOTE: If you run HotJava in a networked environment, and you have trouble accessing Web pages, you probably need to set proxy servers to enable access outside of your company network. Proxies are the servers or gateways for internet access through your network firewall. To specify proxy servers, choose Proxies from the Preferences submenu of the HotJava View menu. Ask your system administrator for the proxy information specific to your site. Supported Platforms ------------------- HotJava preBeta1 is available for SPARC Solaris (version 2.4 and above), Windows NT for the Intel processor, and Windows 95. Support for Solaris x86 and Macintosh systems will be available by HotJava 1.0 FCS. HotJava preBeta1 *may* work on Solaris 2.3, but that platform has not been tested, so it is not supported. Running HotJava on remote X-servers has only had minimal testing. It appears to work, but it is not supported. HotJava will NOT run on Solaris 1.x (SunOs 4.x), Windows 3.1, or Windows 3.11. The HotJava package contains: ----------------------------- - README The file you're reading now. - COPYRIGHT You must make sure you understand the Copyright and License information in this file before using this release. - UsersGuide This directory is a placeholder for future use. Currently, the UsersGuide only lives on the JavaSoft web site. You can access it via the HotJava Help menu. - docs Miscellaneous document files that reside on your local system, such as the HotJava Release Notes that you access via the HotJava Help menu. NOTE: All of the documentation for HotJava, except for this README file, can be accessed via the HotJava Help menu. Some of it resides locally, but much of it lives at the JavaSoft web site. See the "Where to find more information" section below. - bin/HotJava The HotJava program. - lib Miscellaneous files needed for HotJava. Of particular note are the following: - lib/classes.zip DO NOT UNZIP THIS FILE! It is needed by the compiler and interpreter. - lib/properties This is the complete template and system defaults for the HotJava properties file. Look here to see the possible values you can set in your personal properties file to customize your version of HotJava. On Solaris systems, your personal properties file lives in: /.hotjava/properties On Windows NT and Windows 95 systems, your personal properties file is in: \.hotjava\properties - lib/hotjava/* and lib/templates/* Many of HotJava's pages are HTML pages you can customize by replacing the HTML files in these directories. The pages in lib/hotjava are used by HotJava "as is." The pages in lib/templates contain textual elements that are substituted as appropriate when displayed. - lib/images/* HotJava's GIF images. Again, you can customize your version of HotJava by replacing the GIF images that live here. NOTE: This release of HotJava does not include the Java Developer's Kit (JDK). The JDK is available separately; see the JavaSoft home page at http://java.sun.com.
