About RFtp RFtp is a GUI-based FTP client for Windows 95 and now NT 4.0. While having the load-time and footprint of an "applet", it retains the features and functionality of a full-sized application! ________________________________________________________________________ CHECK OUT THESE FEATURES: * Windows 95 / NT 4.0 interface (ListControls, ProgressControls, ToolTips and more) * PropertySheet based - small footprint, uncluttered look * Graphical view of remote system uses familiar icons and context menus * Saves visited sites and user settings in the system registry - no "ini" files! * Both anonymous and user-name/password logins supported * PINGing of arbitrary URLs supported * Downloads (and uploads) have their own thread, so interface remains responsive! * Uploads accomplished by merely dropping files in Remote window * "Passive-mode" transfers supported to accomadate firewalls * Session log maintained with variable amount of detail, or none at all! BUT WAIT, THERE'S LESS! THAT'S RIGHT, LESS. YOU GET ALL THIS AND MORE FOR FREE, NOTHING, ZIP, NADA, ZILCH! ________________________________________________________________________ RFTP "HOT TIPS" * Watch the titlebar for exciting and informative messages! * FTP sites are not "remembered" until you Connect to them - Ping won't save addresses! * FTP sites can be "forgotten" by bringing them up in the selection (URL) box and pushing Remove * While RFtp features "mildly encrypted" password storage, don't check Save password if you have any concern regarding your computer's security! * Change directories on your Remote system quickly and easily by double-clicking on the folder icons * Right-click on a selected file (or group of files) to download them from the Remote system, Delete them, or view their Properties * Right-click on the Remote window background to change your icon view or arrangement or to Logoff * Downloads (or uploads) may be cancelled by typing the Escape key in the Remote page * Don't forget to select the appropriate transfer mode (on the Remote toolbar) before file transfers! Make sure you go to the Options page and enter your e-mail address in the text box - this will allow you to do anonymous logins without entering anything other than the server's address on the Host page! Put another way, for anonymous logins, just specify the FTP site you want and press Connect! The "catch": this software is still under development! While I think it works, there are a lot of "funny" FTP servers out there (not to mention a lot of different computers and system configurations)! _________________________________________________________________ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Why does RFtp look like a "Property Sheet" or "Tabbed Dialog"? A: The idea is to allow you to focus on the current task, i.e., connecting to a host OR working with a remote directory OR setting options etc. Q: Why can't I see both a "Local" and Remote window at the same time? A: You can! Just position RFtp and the Explorer (or your favorite system navigation tool) so that both are visible, then let each program do what it's good at: displaying a window onto a "Local" or Remote directory! Q: I seem to be having problems with non- passive-mode data connections; what's the story? A: If you are running a version earlier than 0.9.2.5, download the latest version now! Q: What is Ping and why do I care? A: Ping sends a series of Internet "tell-me-you-got-there" messages to a host and reports (for each) how long it took to get the response OR "****", which means either that the message took a long time or there was no response. Useful for determining whether an IP address is "good" currently (or at all!), and roughly, the expected "performance". Q: What is a "URL"? A: URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator (an "address" to most of us). A URL represents a standardized (RFC1738) way of describing the type and location (anywhere on the Internet!) of a "resource". A resource can be virtually anything, from a Web page (this page's URL is http://www.primenet.com/~roessler/RFtp.html), to a USENET newsgroup (e.g., news:alt.binaries.pictures.misc), to the kind that RFtp likes: a directory on an FTP server (e.g., ftp://ftp.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/images). Note that RFtp will assume the "ftp://" if you don't supply it. Q: How do I get a bogus or no longer useful site entry out of my URL list? A: See "Why is there a Remove button?" below. Q: Why is there a Remove button? A: Sometimes a URL changes, becomes "invalid", or you just don't want to go there anymore. Select the URL in the URL drop-down list, press Remove, and poof, it's gone! This list is updated as questions come in, so e-mail me (roessler@netcom.com) your questions! I am also working on optional longer answers for those who are interested in more detailed explanations. ________________________________________________________________________ REVISION HISTORY Version 0.9.7.0 * Properties menu entry enabled - shows detailed info on single- or multi- selections, including size, date and time, and "Links to:" value for "symbolic links" * Handling of "symbolic links" completely revamped - separate icon, link destination not displayed (see above), and final component of link destination used to generate Local name for downloading * Logoff entry available on Remote page right-click menu * "Full" URLs (ending in a file) are now processed by Connecting to the named server and changing to the last directory component Version 0.9.6.0 * As of this release, RFtp runs under both Windowsr 95 and NTr 4.0! Plus, it's faster! * Cached Remote directories revisited: case is now retained and significant! Version 0.9.2.5 * By popular demand, users may now explicitly enter "anonymous" for the user name on anonymous logins, even though RFtp doesn't require it! (see Hot Tips above) * Downloading of the currently selected file set in the Remote window may now be started via the Enter key (note that your current transfer mode will be used without the "reminder" you get from right-click). * A [timing] problem with non- passive-mode transfers on some systems has been corrected. Version 0.9.2.4 * All cached Remote directories accessible through dropdown list on Remote page * Directory sorting now toggles between ascending and descending orders in Details view on Remote page * Adjusted Date/Time sorting of directory entries for files dated up to a day in the "future" (i.e., between you and the Internation Date Line, heading East) Version 0.9.2.3 * Asynchronous PINGing implemented! (I know... I should have done it this way initially) * Clarified Delete handling of Unix-style "symbolic links" (like rm - the link goes, not the target) * "Remove RFtp from Registry and Quit" button on Options page finally does something! (although why anyone would actually want to do this isn't clear) Version 0.9.2.2 * Further adjustments to directory caching support (i.e., bug fixes) * Changes to default site list Version 0.9.2.1 * Added caching of Remote directories (and Refresh to force updating of a cached directory) * Cancelling of directory listings now supported via the Escape key in the Remote page Version 0.9.2.0 * Initial release of version 0.9.2.x e-mail comments/questions to: Robert at Robert's high-Performance Software (roessler@netcom.com) _________________________________________________________________ Features Download HotTips FAQ RevisionHistory This page last updated on 09/07/96 23:59.
