Z39.50 IMPLEMENTATIONS SUPPORTING STAS CAS - Chemical Abstracts Service Each implementation described below makes full use of STAS. Our initial implementation of Z39.50 is part of a research project to explore mechanisms for providing user access to commercial online services. CAS is developing a Z39.50 server interface to the Messenger search and retrieval software. This Z39.50 server is being used by a pilot project for the USPTO to provide experimental Z39.50 access to the USPAT file at USPTO from a Z39.50 client developed by CNIDR. CAS will also provide Z39.50 access to the Messenger search and retrieval software running at FIZ-K in Karlsruhe, Germany, in support of the German Library Project. In addition, CAS is developing an intelligent, easy-to-use Z39.50 desktop client for search and retrieval of CAS scientific and technical databases. CNIDR CNIDR has prepared a set of Z39.50 protocol development tools, known as Z-Dist. The most current release of Z-Dist was made on December 4th, 1994. The next release, due around Jan. 5, 1995, will include a simple search engine, and email to Z39.50 and WWW to Z39.50 gateways. The current beta release of Z-Dist forms the backbone of the AIDS Patents Project which provides access to United States Patents relating to AIDS through a STAS compliant Z39.50 Version 2 server.
