PrecisionID MICR Calibration Tool

It is not normally necessary to use fonts other than the standard PrecisionID MICR font. However, some printers will print more wide or narrow than they are supposed to. This can cause read errors on some sensitive MICR readers. When this is the case, one of the following must be done to ensure proper printing:

  1. Use the standard PrecisionID MICR font and slightly increase or decrease the point size accordingly in small increments until you achieve 8 characters per inch. For example, 9.95 points will print slightly less than 10 points.
  2. If your application only supports printing point sizes that are whole numbers, use this MICR Calibration Tool to determine what font you need to use for your printer.
  3. As a last resort, the scaling of your printer may need to be adjusted. This is usually a hardware adjustment that is performed by a technician.

Notice: When printing MICR, we suggest using a printer that is at least 600 DPI. If you are using a printer with less than 600 DPI, you may not notice a difference between some of these fonts.

Instructions for using the MICR Calibration Tool:

  1. Install the MICR toner cartridge in your printer that you will print your checks on.
  2. Print this document to the printer that you will print your checks on.
  3. Wait a few minutes for the printed document to cool.
  4. Using the examples below, measure the distance between the top of the first “1” and the last “1” in each row with a ruler; use the font that measures the closest to 4 inches.
